The applicant must:

  1. be officially accepted into an accredited graduate program (at a university other than Gallaudet) as a full-time student or be already enrolled as a full-time graduate student (Students in the dissertation stage may be considered as full-time. Students provisionally accepted into a graduate program pending completion of required course work are not eligible.);
  2. be deaf or hard of hearing
  3. be able and willing to serve as a teaching assistant at Gallaudet University, with duties specified by the appropriate academic department;
  4. already possess sign skills at an appropriate level;
  5. aspire to a teaching and research career;
  6. be willing to work for two years in a faculty position, if such a position becomes available.

The applicant's program of studies must:

  1. be at an accredited United States institution of higher education which offers a Ph.D. or other terminal degree;
  2. permit the time for the applicant to teach at Gallaudet University;
  3. be in an academic discipline which has the potential to lead to a Ph.D. or terminal degree in the priority field of study. For the academic year 2009-2010, the following fields will be considered:
    • Education
    • Mathematics & Computer Science
